Devlog 1

Week 1

During this first week, we were put into the groups that we will be working in to create our game project. The people in games programming that I am working with are Joe and MacKenzie. We began discussing what kind of game we were wanting to make and coming up with some ideas to present to the other members of our group in game art animation. Having done that, we had a brief talk with some of the animators about what kind of game they were wanting to make. Luckily, we both wanted to create a sci-fi/ fantasy game so there wasn’t much disagreement in that. We all joined a discord group that we will be using to communicate with each other and share what we are working on. I was asked to share my game idea to the rest of the group and so I did.

Week 2

In week 2, we had our first team meeting where we all sat down to talk about the game project. In this meeting, we discussed which aspects of the game project we would each be taking on, i will be focusing on the games storyline/ narrative and dialogue, i will be writing the story of the game and I will be the one to write the scripts for dialogue betweens characters throughout the game, because I am doing this I will also be working on he dialogue systems and I am going to do the quest systems as well. I have also begun to collect some images to create a mood board that I will show to the rest of the group. There have been some issues as far as communication goes with the art students, myself the the other two game programmers have been trying to discuss possible game ideas with them so that we can create two game ideas we all like and can pitch together.

Week 3

In week 3, we didn’t have our meeting because we did the game pitch presentation with the other students in our group. the art students didn’t tell us that they were making the pitch presentation, they just made it and then sent it to us once it was done a couple of days prior to the pitch meeting, they also didn’t discuss the game ideas they were going to pitch, they came up with an idea by themselves and didn't mention it to us until we were sent the pitch presentation, and as far as the second idea goes, they just used the idea I had suggested in discord, they just copy and pasted everything I had written in discord into the presentation, this was odd to me as they didn’t seem like they were huge fans of my idea when I first suggested it. Then during the actual pitch, they explained the idea incorrectly, there wasn’t really much we could do about any of this as they haven’t been particularly good at communicating with us, they have seemingly just focused on what they themselves want to make for the game without thinking about the fact that it’s the programmers that are going to have to be the ones to create it.

Week 4

In week 4, we found out that the game idea the art students had come up with had been greenlit, this was somewhat frustrating as us game programmers had nothing to do with the creation of this game idea and so we feel like we have just been handed this game to create even though none of us had any input in it. We had our weekly meeting to discuss the project after it was greenlit, we discussed what we were each going to do first, The art students said that one of them would send me some information about what they were wanting for the games story/ narrative and characters so that I would be able to begin work on writing the dialogue and story needed for the game. I need this because like I mentioned last week, the game programming students were not involved with the creation of this game idea and so I don’t really have any idea of what the narrative is supposed to be or what the art students are wanting for it to be. Joe and I also created a Game Design Document and joe put it in the discord to get feedback from the group, the few who replied seemed to be happy with it.
